NVIDIA launches Tesla supercomputer

2008112055691501WIDE APPLICATIONS: Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder President and CEO, nVIDIA Corp, launches the new generation graphic processing unit-based Tesla supercomputer at the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Technology to enable mobile phones and handheld devices to work with quick response time while executing numerous applications, consuming lesser power, is what $4-biilion nVIDIA is planning to research on, after it launched graphic processing unit (GPU)-based Tesla supercomputer.

Introducing the Tesla supercomputer here on Wednesday, a day after its global launch in the U.S., Jen-Hsun Huang, President and CEO, nVIDIA, said that the supercomputer would transform the personal workstations as it would enhance the efficiency of a personal computer by 250 times.

Computer makers such as Dell, Lenovo, and Hewlett-Packard came forward to power their desktops and laptops by Tesla.

High-performance computing which was useful for research and other large operations in fields such as astrophysics, molecular biology, and medical diagnostics and universities could use the complex simulation models. Every scientist, student or an engineer could write supercomputing software to suit their needs.

The Tesla built on compute unified device architecture (CUDA) would not replace the CPU (central processing unit) of a personal computer, but it would complement the work of the CPU with the help of GPU numerous times.

Mr. Huang, who inaugurated a supercomputer lab in the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) here, said the new computer would accelerate research by 10 years. Tokyo Tech rated this as the 29th fastest supercomputer in the world.
